Schools are key institutions where it is possible to intervene with children and adolescents. Teachers are important sources of information about mental health and can provide mental health first aid. Peers are also a potential source of support for adolescents who develop mental health problems.

Mental health problems often first occur during adolescence. However, many adolescents with mental health problems seek support from their friends rather than from professionals or other adults. teen MHFA is a short training course for high school students in Years 10-12 which teaches them how to support a friend who is developing a mental health problem or in a crisis situation.
